Symbolic or legal wedding in Cuba: differences and how to combine them
Updated: November 5, 2026. Laws checked on November 4, 2026.
A legal wedding is the one that marries you in the eyes of the law: it is formalized before a notary or a registrar, with documents and timelines. A symbolic wedding is a ceremony with no legal effect, which you can hold wherever the venue allows. You can also combine the two: the legal procedure on one side and the celebration in Cuba on the other.
This guide compares the two options, explains how to combine them and what to do if something goes wrong on the day. The legal requirements are set out in the guide to getting married in Cuba in 2026. This guide does not replace advice from a lawyer.

Differences between a legal and a symbolic wedding
| Aspect | Legal wedding | Symbolic wedding |
|---|---|---|
| Legal effect | Yes, once formalized before the competent official (Family Code, art. 201.3) | Not under Cuban law |
| Who leads it | A notary or a registrar, depending on the case | Whoever you choose, if the venue agrees: an officiant, a relative or a friend |
| Where | At the office or, within limits, away from it | Wherever the venue allows: beach, hotel, estate or rooftop |
| Documents | For each foreigner, as a baseline: passport and proof of legal stay, birth and marital status certificates, legalized and, depending on the case, entered into a notary’s records | We have not found any requirements in the rules we checked; the venue and suppliers may ask for their own |
| Timelines | Advance public notice and the office’s service time | Whatever the venue and suppliers need |
On a legal wedding away from the office: the notarial regulations mention marriage away from the office at the couple’s request (Resolution 331/2025, art. 47.2), but the notary generally acts within their province and the notarial record cannot be taken out of the notary’s office except in certain cases (Law 175, arts. 19.2, 20.1 and 258.1). Confirm beforehand whether they can travel to your venue on your date.
When to choose each one
Choose a legal wedding in Cuba if you want to marry there in the eyes of the law and can gather the documents in time. Bear in mind that, to have effect in your country, you will normally have to legalize and register the marriage there; each country sets its own rules.
If you have questions about the documents, the timelines or which office applies to you, we can help you clear them up. The final word belongs to the office handling your case.
Choose a symbolic wedding if:
- You are already married, or you prefer to handle the legal procedure in your own country.
- You want the ceremony on a beach, at a hotel or on an estate, without depending on whether the notary can come that day.
- Your documents will not be ready in time for your date.
- You want to renew your vows.
If you choose a symbolic wedding, we can organize it from start to finish: the venue, the styling, who leads the ceremony, the music, photography and video, and coordination on the day. Tell us your idea.
How to combine them
- Legal in your country and symbolic in Cuba. You handle the procedure under your country’s rules, before or after the trip, and hold the ceremony in Cuba. Ask your civil registry what it requires and how long it takes. If one of you is Cuban, also ask how to register it in Cuba (Law 180, art. 126).
- Legal in Cuba and a separate celebration. You formalize the marriage before the competent official, at the office handling your case, and the ceremony with guests takes place at the venue you chose, on the same day or another. Confirm the date of the legal act with that office first.
- Vow renewal. If you are already married, the ceremony is symbolic. We have not found any legal procedure for holding it in the rules we checked; ask the venue whether it requires anything.
If you handle the procedure in your own country, we take care of the celebration in Cuba, remotely too. If you handle it in Cuba, we coordinate the ceremony with the date of the legal act.
Plan B: what to do if something goes wrong
In Cuba it is worth having a plan B for each part of the day:
- The notary cannot come to the venue. We have seen this happen: at some weddings the notarial books could not be taken out of the notary’s office and the ceremony had to be symbolic. If you want the legal wedding at the venue, decide in advance what you will do if they cannot come. One option to ask the office about: formalize the marriage at its premises on another day and hold the symbolic ceremony on the planned date. Both of you must appear for this, or one of you with a special power of attorney from the other (Law 180, arts. 121.4 and 124).
- The documents are delayed. Keep the date with a symbolic ceremony and handle the legal procedure when they are ready, in Cuba or in your own country. If it is in Cuba, both of you must appear, or one of you with a special power of attorney; also check the date of your certificate of single status.
- Rain. Ask the venue for a covered space or a tent set up. If your date falls in the Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, also ask what happens if you have to postpone.
- Power cuts. Ask whether the venue has a generator and what it covers: lighting, sound, kitchen.
The questions worth asking each venue are in where foreigners get married in Cuba. When we choose the venue with you, we go through these questions and prepare the plan B together.
Checklist
- Decide whether you want legal effect and in which country you will handle the procedure.
- If it is in Cuba, confirm the documents and timelines with the office, and whether the notary can come to the venue.
- If it is in your country, ask how and when to do it.
- Choose who will lead the symbolic ceremony and in which language.
- Ask the venue for its plan B for rain and power cuts.
Frequently asked questions
Is a symbolic wedding legally valid in Cuba?
No. Only a marriage formalized before the competent official has legal effects (Family Code, art. 201.3). A symbolic ceremony does not marry you under Cuban law. To find out how your country treats it, ask your civil registry.
Who can officiate a symbolic wedding?
The ceremony does not formalize a marriage, and we have not found any requirements in the rules we checked on who leads it. It can be an officiant, a relative or a friend, in the language you prefer. Ask the venue whether it sets any conditions.
Can we have a symbolic wedding on the beach?
Yes, if the venue allows it. Ask the hotel or whoever is responsible for the place what conditions or permits apply and what covered alternative there is for rain.
Can we marry legally in our country and celebrate the wedding in Cuba?
Yes. You handle the procedure under your country’s rules and hold a symbolic ceremony in Cuba. Ask your civil registry about the requirements and timelines. If one of you is Cuban, also ask how to register it in Cuba (Law 180, art. 126).
What happens if the notary cannot come on the wedding day?
The notary generally acts within their province and the notarial record cannot be taken out of the notary’s office except in certain cases (Law 175, arts. 20.1 and 258.1). If they cannot come, ask the office whether you can formalize it at its premises on another day, and hold the symbolic ceremony at the venue. Decide that alternative in advance.
What is a vow renewal?
It is a symbolic ceremony for couples who are already married. We have not found any legal procedure for holding it in the rules we checked; ask the venue whether it requires anything.
Can you help us with the legal wedding paperwork?
Yes. We advise you on the procedures and can answer questions about documents and timelines. The marriage is always formalized by the competent official, and the decision on your case belongs to their office.
Can you organize the whole symbolic wedding?
Yes, from start to finish: the venue, the styling, who leads the ceremony, the music, photography and video, and coordination on the day, even if you live outside Cuba.
Do you want to celebrate your wedding in Cuba?
At As de Sueños we advise you on the procedures and coordinate the celebration, legal or symbolic, or the vow renewal, and we prepare a plan B with you. Tell us your date and your idea: the first consultation is free and we will send you a proposal.
